Trilogy Community Clean Up Day – Saturday May 6, 2023

Trilogy Community Clean Up Day- Saturday May 6, 2023

Register at this link:  My Members at My Trilogy Life

Come join your neighbors as we work in common areas and trailheads to remove invasive plants such as scotch broom, blackberry vines, thistle, tansy ragwort, and vetch. The Whitman Landscape Committee is partnering with the Trilogy Trails Club for this Clean Up Day. No tree branches or debris can be removed.

We will meet at the front of Seven Summits Lodge at 10:00am to organize into work groups. Each volunteer will be required to sign an updated liability release and each work group will have a group leader and be assigned areas in a particular neighborhood.  The two primary work areas will be in Glacier Peak and Mt. St. Helens where dumpsters will be located.  All volunteers will need to bring heavy duty work gloves and any pruners, loppers, or weeding tools you might have. No power tools of any type are permitted.  Trash bags and bottled water will be provided. Volunteers will be working removing blackberries and should wear heavy pants and shirts with long sleeves. If you have tarps usable to drag the blackberry canes to the provided dumpsters, please bring them.

The DNR and a Tree Service vendor will be working in other areas of Trilogy during the day.  Volunteers are not allowed to be near these work crews.

A late lunch and light snack will be provided to participating volunteers on the Events Lawn at Seven Summits Lodge at 2:00pm.

Please be sure to register for the event on My Trilogy Life (MTL). The last day to register or cancel is April 29.

Wildfire Preparedness 2022

Fire Wise Members,
Summer has arrived in Washington.  Red Flag warnings (warm temps, very low humidity and stronger winds combine to produce an increased risk of fire danger) have been issued in Central Washington and local/state fire fighters are preparing for a busy summer fire season.
We can do our part in Wildfire Preparedness by refreshing our individual emergency supplies, performing outdoor maintenance on flammable vegetation around our homes, and ensuring that you are signed up for the “Pierce County Alert” program to receive notifications for emergencies that may affect your locations. It also allows fire and police to send out accurate and timely information to residents.
And most importantly, read this and pass it on.

REMINDER – MAY 7 CLEAN UP DAY

f you have not yet registered to participate in the Trilogy Clean Up Day on Saturday, May 7, please consider doing so. It is a joint event managed in coordination with the Trilogy Landscape Committee, the Trilogy Trail Club and Trilogy Tehaleh Firewise. Use this link to register on MTL, where more details are posted: https://members.mytrilogylife.com/events/1145552

This event is scheduled to correspond with the National Wildfire Preparedness Day, which is the first Saturday in May. Working with the

We’ve arranged for Department of Natural Resources (DNR) employees to work with chainsaws in one area of Trilogy, clearing downed trees and branches and dragging the debris to the nearest road. A commercial chipper service will be on-site to chip debris and haul it from the site. As a result of this work, the DNR-managed area will become a model area of a clean natural forest, allowing the native shrubs and underbrush to flourish. For safety reasons, the area managed by the DNR staff will be marked off limits to volunteers.

Last year during the Trilogy clean-up event, volunteers filled a 20-yard dumpster over the brim with invasive plants that were removed from our trails and trail heads. This year, the Tehaleh Owners Association is renting two 20-yard dumpsters as a show of their appreciation for the great turnout of volunteers. In addition, the Whitman Community Association and Shea Homes have agreed to cover the cost of hot dogs, hamburgers, fruit, and chips that will be served at 2 p.m. at Seven Summits Lodge.
Trilogy-Tehaleh-Firewise has been working with the Tehaleh Owners Association, the Department of Natural Resources, and the Pierce Conservation District to form what we all hope is the beginning of a partnership that will reduce the fire fuel load in our local forested areas and increase the beauty of living in Tehaleh.

Trilogy Tehaleh Firewise Survey – October 19, 2021

HOA/TOA/Newland/ Brookfield Involvement

TTF Response

a. Specifically what does the HOA do for us to mitigate the dangers presented by the road and fuel load? a. TOA does trim fallen trees in its green spaces to get the branches closer to the ground to reduce the fire risk to help branches disintegrate into the soil more quickly.  See response 2A below regarding the road.
b. Why does the HOA resist the dangers rather than help mitigate? b. TOA owns the property and follows the guidelines agreed to by Pierce County as part of the overall development plan.  Any additional actions would cost dollars which are not budgeted for and may not be in with the plan.
c. How do we get around their resistance? c. Firewise hopes to obtain grants that would enable more green space clearing of fuel to reduce fire risk.  Grants would enable the work to be completed without any additional financial burden on TOA.
The Fuel Load on the trails and in the forest
a. Specifically what projects are being done by any group to reduce the fuel load and reduce the danger. a. Firewise completed a project in Tract Y (Mt. Baker neighborhood) in 2021.  The project included clearing invasive blackberry vines and reforestation with more than 100 plants and trees thanks to the help of bordering residents and volunteers.  The Tehaleh Owners Association (TOA) approved the project with Firewise as the primary coordinator and administrator.  The project was a success and Firewise believes they have gained TOA’s confidence to successfully marshal similar projects in the future throughout Trilogy.  Firewise will be taking suggestions for similar projects for 2022.
The Country Road to Tehaleh
a. There needs to be a real date of completion for the road a. Newland/Brookfield has an agreement with the County that the road must be completed when the Tehaleh built-out home count reaches 3,000.  Once that mark is met, Newland/Brookfield will need to stop building homes until the second access road is completed and thus has a huge financial incentive to complete the road by Q1 of 2025 when the Tehaleh home count is expected to reach 3,000.  The Trilogy final home count will be 855 to be completed Q1 of 2023 and is included as part of the Tehaleh home count.
b. We need evacuation routes b.  Currently there is only one route out of Tehaleh off the plateau on 190th Ave.  Once at the bottom of the hill a decision can be made on which way to travel based upon the fire risk or traffic congestion.  One can drive 198th Ave into Bonney Lake or turn right on 120th ST E or turn left on Rhodes Lake Road E.
c. We need to practice evacuating – a practice “fire drill” c. With only one way currently out of Tehaleh, we don’t believe a practice fire drill would provide much value.  What would be helpful is if every house practiced the READY-SET-GO steps to be better prepared if a wildfire threatened their home or neighborhood.  Information regarding evacuation steps can be found at www.eastpiercefire.org. and at www.trilogy-tehaleh-firewise.org.
d. How to get information during an emergency or when a fire is approaching.  Facebook or Twitter cannot be the only means, as many Trilogy residents are not on either. d. For those that have access Twitter: @EastPierceFire and Facebook:  East Pierce Fire and Rescue are excellent sources to get updated emergency information.  If a resident does not have access, they can stay in touch with a friend or neighbor during critical times to keep informed.  Also, anyone can register with the Pierce County Emergency Alert System (https://www.co.pierce.wa.us/917/Alert-Warning).  This alert system will send emergency messages to your home phone, cell phone or email directly from the County.
Miscellaneous
a. We need someone to address fireworks/we need someone to stop fireworks a. Fireworks are under the jurisdiction of Pierce County.  You can reach out to our Council Person Dave Morell to express your concerns regarding fireworks.  His assistant is Judy Hurley who spoke at our October Trilogy Firewise meeting.  You can contact David via pccouncil@piercecountywa.gov (use the send email link listed with his name) or call 253-798-3635.
b. We could use more information on defensible spaces and how to protect homes b. There are some helpful tips regarding wildfire defensible space at www.eastpiercefire.org and the National Firewise website at www.nfpa.org.
Firewise
a. The website is not helpful a.  Please keep in mind that Trilogy-Tehaleh-Firewise (www.Trilogy-Tehaleh-Firewise.org) is a 100% volunteer organization and we do not have the resources to develop and maintain a world class website.  However, if anyone has ideas or suggestions of specific ways to improve the site, we will welcome and appreciate your input.
b. The website does not say how to join and what that means b. If you go to our website (www.Trilogy-Tehaleh-Firewise.org) please click on the contact link.  The window will give you directions on how to register and provide an email on where to send questions and comments.  Individuals who register on our website will receive Firewise informational messages, meeting notices, project notices, volunteer requests, newsletters, etc.  Please be aware that our organization is active only in Trilogy and does not reach out to other Tehaleh neighborhoods.
c. Firewise needs to do more projects and be an advocacy group c. Firewise does actively work with Whitman, TOA, Newland/Brookfield, Pierce County and the DNR.  We did a walk-through in the green spaces in early December with a DNR Forester to further assess the fire risk.  If any Trilogy resident has suggestions for projects for 2022, please message us via our website.
d. We need regular updates from Firewise Refer to b. above on ways Firewise plans to provide timely information to homeowners.  We believe it more useful for residents to access our website to obtain timely updates as opposed to ‘pushing’ multiple e-notifications.  d. Individuals who register on our website will receive Firewise informational messages, meeting notices, project notices, volunteer requests, newsletters, etc.
Responses to refer to other groups
a. Landscape Committee: berm maintenance, invasives, berries, areas to clean up specified by some.  Also, there was a suggestion of using a woodchipper on the next clean-up day so that more clearing could be done, and more debris put in a bin. The Whitman Landscape Committee works diligently year-round to ensure well maintained and attractive landscape grounds in our community.  Common areas (not homeowner property or Seven Summit Lodge) are owned by Tehaleh, thus TOA sets constraints on what type of work is permitted and in what specific areas.  The Trilogy Clean Up Day is a community effort of Trilogy resident volunteers to clean up targeted common areas.  Use of a woodchipper to clear tree debris is an excellent idea and will be pursued for upcoming projects (not just for Clean Up Day) but will require TOA approval.
b. TERT: There was a request for more emergency readiness/CPR training etc. The Trilogy Emergency Response Team (TERT) is currently reorganizing their current structure to reflect the recent growth and geographical additions during the past several years.  Thus far, one of the identified priorities for TERT is to facilitate training subjects like CPR, Basic First Aid, Emergency Communications, and Individual Emergency Preparedness.  You will soon see information on available classes that will be available for Trilogy residents to increase their abilities to better survive an emergency event.
